swimming

It truly amazes me how many people do the sport of triathlon and "hate" swimming. It's seen as a "warm up to the bike", something to tolerate, and never enjoy. Our lives are finite in length.. why would we take up a sport where we'll have to spend time doing something we despise so much?

One hard lesson I received in Australia, if you plan on competing in a race that is open water without wetsuit.... you better have some half decent form and fitness. I was dropped in the swim in every race without wetsuit... always several minutes down on the leaders by T2. I can't imagine racing a full Ironman swim that doesn't allow wetsuits, such as Hawaii or Malaysia without some significant swim training... I'd be done before I even started the bike.

It isn't a huge time commitment. 40 minutes in June and 80 minutes in August is usually all it takes.
